The original painting The Two Brothers, produced in 1972, was owned by an anonymous friend of Lowry and thenceforth his descendants from 1970 until 2004, a man who collected many of Lowry’s works throughout his lifetime. This friend owned a total of nine Lowry paintings, acquired over a period of twenty-five years. It has been said that this friend would have lunch with the artist every Tuesday and was a frequent visitor of the artist’s house The Elms in Mottram. Because of the friendship between this man and the artist, we are privy to Lowry’s thoughts on his own painting.
The Two Brothers depicts two figures donning matching bowler hats who mirror each other to the point of almost merging in an uncanny unison. The composition was said to be Lowry’s favourite painting that he created. “It is absolutely symbolic of life” he commented to his friend, “There are those two fellows, they could be brother salesmen, they could be calling door to door collecting insurance. There are two figures in the back whom I don't mean to be policemen but who could easily be taken for such. There's the church at the back, the two little kids there, and these two poor devils going about their business. Now that's the industrial scene, too.”
The present work’s composition is unusual for the artist, who often worked with more traditional landscape orientation canvases, and was of course better known for his industrial panoramas depicting the Northwest of England. Although flanked by buildings and framed within an archway, the brothers are not quite centred and are instead captured mid-step. As Lowry biographer and historian Shelley Rohde explains: “No happening in a city street was too insignificant” for the artist.  The other figures are all in motion as well, making this artwork a true snapshot of urban life.
