L.S. Lowry Biography

British artist Laurence Stephen Lowry (1887-1976) is best known for his instantly recognisable scenes of the industrial north, inhabited by milling crowds of ‘matchstick men’, smoking chimneys, and imposing factories. In his highly unique style, and with great wit and sensitivity, Lowry recorded the industry, architecture, and characters that surrounded him and captured his imagination whilst he traversed the streets of Greater Manchester.

Rent collector by day and avid painter by night, he firmly rejected the opinions of his early critics, declaring “I’m a Sunday painter who paints every day of the week!”. His overpopulated cityscapes and bleakly humorous depictions of everyday, working-class life have earned him a spot as one of the most highly-celebrated artists of the twentieth century.

In 2022, his 1953 oil painting Going to the Match sold for £7.8 million at Christie’s in London, setting an impressive auction record for the much-loved British artist and demonstrating the lasting appeal of his works for twenty first-century collectors.
