Jack Davis

Jack Davis

Combining a variety of marks, textures and layers, Jack Davis’s immersive, large-scale paintings represent his personal response to the Cornish coastline.

Born and brought up in Bath, Davis relocated to Cornwall, compelled, he says, by the light and the artistic heritage. “Cornwall is at the end of the line, remote, rugged and embodied with an ancient primal majesty. Living in such an impressive environment evokes plenty of inspiration on a daily basis; I am drawn to raw power of the natural environment and the sublime effect of light. I try to harness the impulsive energy of my subject matter and create order out of chaos - like the landscape I inhabit.”

Jack Davis Biography

Rather than painting from photographs, Davis paints the dramatic skies and seas which surround his home in St. Just directly from his experience in the landscape. “When you’re out there”, he explains “you don’t have time to overcomplicate things; it’s all about letting the subconscious come through. The pulse and flux of the vacillating weather and the luminosity of operatic light, provide me with constant inspiration."

In 2016, Davis became a tutor at the Newlyn School of Art, joining an impressive roster of practicing artists in Cornwall. In addition to being housed in both private and corporate collections, his work has been exhibited at the Members Autumn and Spring Exhibitions of the St. Ives Society of Artists and in galleries worldwide. He has won the Threadneedle Prize: ‘Figurative Art Today’ and been published in ‘Future Now: 100 Contemporary Artists’ from the Aesthetica Art Prize.
