The church depicted in the present work by L.S. Lowry is St. Mary’s in Beswick, a region of Manchester that was historically part of the county of Lancashire. The church was built in 1878 as a memorial to the Bishop of Manchester, James Prince Lee (1804-1869). Lowry’s drawing now acts as a historic record of this building, as the church was demolished in 1965. A few years before its demolition the church was used as a filming location for the 1961 film A Kind of Loving. A still taken from this film shows the accuracy in which Lowry depicted the church and its surroundings.
Throughout his career, Lowry was fascinated by the lonely, upright churches of Manchester, often marooned on patches of waste-ground between terraces and factories. In his paintings, they symbolise the isolation of life in the city, and the ability to be alone even when in the midst of a crowd. In their vertical form, Churches have an almost human presence, an anthropomorphic quality and, in Lowry’s work, critics have identified them as a metaphor for the artist himself, as he stands back from the hustle and bustle of the city’s streets, watching all of life pass by.
As a child, Lowry attended Sunday school every week with his mother, who played the organ. The artist continued a dedication to religion into adulthood and had in his collection a book of sermons, The Graver Thoughts of a Country Parson.
Although perhaps best-known for his works in oil, Lowry defended the art of drawing, explaining why it was as important, if not more important than a painting. According to the Lowry Studio in Nottinghamshire, Lowry “felt it could be more effective and dramatic; also, it was more difficult to achieve a satisfactory result in black and white, as there were no colours that could be used to cover up and hide mistakes.”
