Artwork Description:

Size:39 x 33 in.

"Regency Wharf" by Tom Butler is a vibrant 30" x 24" mixed media collage that captures the bustling energy and industrial charm of Birmingham’s Regency Wharf. Tom Butler, renowned for his innovative use of collage techniques, constructs this cityscape with layers of newspaper clippings, photographs, paint, and other found materials, giving the work a unique and textured appearance. The white and grey wooden scoop frame complements the contemporary style of the artwork, enhancing its urban aesthetic.

In this dynamic piece, Butler portrays a lively canal scene, where boats are docked along the water, reflecting Birmingham's industrial heritage and its network of waterways. The collage is full of intricate details: old-fashioned brick buildings, with signage like "Regency Wharf" and "Food Drink Beer," are juxtaposed against modern structures, creating a visual story that reflects both the past and present of the area.

Butler’s signature style includes incorporating text and fragments of print media into the artwork, which adds a layer of narrative to the composition. Here, snatches of newspaper headlines and text, cleverly integrated into the architecture, provide both visual and thematic depth. The use of mixed media gives the scene a sense of layering, as if the history of the place is built up in fragments over time.

The collage is not just a depiction of a physical location, but also a reflection of urban life, with the boats, bridges, and buildings all interacting in a symphony of shapes, textures, and colours. The waterways in the foreground are depicted with swirling blues and whites, creating a fluid contrast to the angular architecture of the buildings.

Butler’s playful use of materials, such as turning snippets of crossword puzzles into parts of the cityscape, adds intrigue and a touch of whimsy to the piece. His work combines a sense of place with a narrative exploration of urban spaces, making it both visually striking and intellectually engaging.

"Regency Wharf" is a testament to Tom Butler’s ability to transform ordinary scenes into extraordinary compositions through his imaginative use of collage. The artwork invites viewers to explore the layers of the city and the materials used, encouraging a deeper connection with the subject matter and the artist’s creative process.
