Artwork Description:

Size:25 x 29 in.

Windswept at Porthmeor Beach is an original artwork by Jack Davis measuring 16 x 20 inches, capturing the understated beauty of Cornwall's coastline beneath a brooding sky. The composition is defined by a harmonious balance of sea, sand, and atmosphere, where muted tones of slate grey, soft ivory, and pale blue merge seamlessly to evoke the changing moods of the shoreline. Gentle bands of surf roll steadily towards the beach, while reflective sands shimmer with subtle variations of light, suggesting the retreating tide and the lingering traces of the waves.

Davis uses expressive, layered brushstrokes to simplify the landscape into elegant planes of colour, allowing light and atmosphere to become the true focus of the painting. The expansive sky hangs low above the horizon, creating a sense of quiet anticipation as shifting weather moves across the coast. Delicate reflections and textured surfaces bring depth to the foreground, inviting the viewer to experience the peaceful rhythm of the sea and the ever-changing character of the landscape.

Rather than painting from photographs, Jack Davis works directly from his experience of the dramatic coastline surrounding his home in St Just, Cornwall. Inspired by the pulse of changing tides, powerful weather, and luminous coastal light, he paints instinctively, allowing intuition to guide each composition. A tutor at the Newlyn School of Art and an internationally recognised, award-winning artist, Davis is celebrated for creating evocative seascapes that capture not only the appearance of the landscape but also its atmosphere, emotion, and enduring sense of place.

About Jack Davis

Jack Davis

Combining a variety of marks, textures and layers, Jack Davis’s immersive, large-scale paintings represent his personal response to the Cornish coastline.

Born and brought up in Bath, Davis relocated to Cornwall, compelled, he says, by the light and the artistic heritage. “Cornwall is at the end of the line, remote, rugged and embodied with an ancient primal majesty. Living in such an impressive environment evokes plenty of inspiration on a daily basis; I am drawn to raw power of the natural environment and the sublime effect of light. I try to harness the impulsive energy of my subject matter and create order out of chaos - like the landscape I inhabit”.
