Takashi Murakami

Often called the ‘Warhol of Japan’, Takashi Murakami (b. 1949) is a Japanese contemporary artist renowned for his vibrant, colourful, and whimsical style which contrasts and combines traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary pop culture motifs.
Murakami is celebrated for pioneering the “Superflat” style, distinguished by flat, two dimensional imagery influenced by traditional Japanese art and pop culture. His iconic smiling flower motif was originally created in 1995, the same year he made his European debut at the 46th Venice Biennale, and has acted as a conduit for Murakami’s art over the past thirty years as well as a concentrated convergence point for fashion, art, design, and social media culture.
