In June 1929, Lowry wrote to his friend and regular correspondent Howard Timperley, “To my loss country lanes have been foreign to me somewhat for quite a while past – for alas my recreation seems to have developed into drifting amongst all the back streets, etc., I can come across.” Painted many decades after this letter was written, Street Scene is a quintessential Manchester view from Lowry’s mature period, one that Lowry would have observed every day on his rounds as a rent collector – a career he continued even when he could have lived comfortably off the proceeds of his painting. As Lowry commented in relation to the figures that existed within his later paintings, “They are ghostly figures which tenant these courts and laneways which seem to me so beautiful, they are symbols of my mood, they are myself.”
Street Scene depicts a non-specific location and is therefore able to represent a wider area in the North of England than a singular town. Although the town depicted in this scene ostensibly does not exist in real life as it is shown, it bears a remarkable similarity to a painting Lowry produced 6 years later, Mrs Swindell’s Picture, also produced as a limited-edition offset lithograph. This view was supposedly based on the walk Mrs Swindell – Lowry’s housekeeper – would take each day back from his home in Mottram. Both paintings share the same perspective looking up a street lined on one side by a bright vermillion wall, and on the other by a Prussian blue fence. In both scenes, the foreground is populated by a crowd of figures that go about their daily business in a more leisurely fashion than we often would see in his grittier industrial cityscapes. As with the vast majority of Lowry’s works, this charming image features only the limited palette that Lowry’s employed in his painting: ivory black, flake white, Prussian blue, ochre, and vermilion.
