Artwork Description:

Size:22 x 29 in.

Lee Ellis’s original painting Do you know the star wars theme? (18" x 24") transforms a fleeting moment of music-making into a bold and electrifying image. A single hand, rendered in striking shades of blue, stretches dramatically across the keys of a piano. Its elongated fingers convey a sense of urgency, tension, and performance, while the rough texture and expressive marks suggest both movement and strain. The stark monochrome treatment of the piano contrasts sharply with the hand, which feels alive and commanding. Behind this central focus, a field of diagonal pink and blue stripes creates a playful, graphic backdrop, imbuing the piece with wit and energy.

This witty title underlines Ellis’s ability to blend humour with intensity, a balance that defines much of his recent work. Known for his raw depictions of the human form and psyche, Ellis brings the same expressive power to his exploration of gesture and music here, elevating an ordinary detail into something iconic and charged. As a Bristol-based multi-media artist, Ellis continually pushes at the edges of painting, layering colour, mark-making and form to generate impact and originality. Do you know the star wars theme? stands as both a celebration of performance and a testament to his restless, experimental vision.
