In their vertical form, Churches have an almost human presence, an anthropomorphic quality and, in Lowry’s work, critics have identified them as a metaphor for the artist himself, as he stands back from the hustle and bustle of the city’s streets, watching all of life pass by. Often depicting real buildings in non-specific or locations, Lowry’s imaginary cityscapes represent the identity of industrial Northwest, rather than an exact location, which is perhaps why so many people are drawn to his works. In reality, the surroundings of Burford Church look nothing like they do in Lowry’s depiction and yet the scene appears to be rooted in reality.
Some of Lowry’s earliest and perhaps most celebrated depictions of churches are those he produced during the Second World War as a result of his association with the War Artist’s Advisory Committee, who had commissioned him to produce works recording the effects of war on the domestic front. Although still stricken by the loss of his mother, Lowry painted several notable works of ruined, bomb-torn churches during this period.
