The present work depicts the viaduct in the northern town of Stockport, a site that has featured in various artworks by Lowry including paintings that name the town of Stockport as its location as well as within artworks with more ambiguous and generic titles such as Industrial Landscape. Lowry was continuously drawn to a number of sites throughout his career and often incorporated elements of different towns together in a single composition in order to represent the entire region of the Northwest as a collective way of life.
The Stockport Viaduct was one of the largest brick structures in Europe, and its image haunted Lowry. He once remarked “'It fascinates me, dominates my imagination. As you know, my pictures are often based on separate fragments of reality which I fit together to create townscapes. Not all my pictures, by any means, are topographically accurate, many are composite, and it is into these composite pieces that the Stockport Viaduct so often creeps, like some recurring subject in a dream.”
