Our Town is a charming example of L.S. Lowry’s quintessential townscapes. Whilst Lowry did sometimes depict specific locations, whether his local Salford or further afield, he often worked from both memory and his own invention to create his imaginary compositions. In his own words, “Most of my land and townscape is composite. Made up; part real and part imaginary... bits and pieces of my home locality. I don’t even know I’m putting them in. They just crop up on their own, like things do in dreams.” Utilising his numerous pencil sketches for reference, these ‘dreamscapes’ are celebrated for their endearingly honest portrayal of the gritty working lives of those inhabiting the industrial towns of Northern England.
In the present work, Lowry has blended the bleak reality of the industrial town with humorous figurative details. The inhospitable skyline, punctuated by neo-Gothic church steeples and slated roofs, is clouded by the black smog pouring out of the slender factory chimneys. The square in the foreground teems with figures, the artist’s so-called ‘matchstick men’, going about their daily lives. Enclosed within red-brick houses and shops, entertaining details reveal themselves amidst the bustling inhabitants and scampering dogs under close inspection: the portly man in his bowler hat, spinning his cane as he waddles through town; the two madly capering figures arm-in-arm; the figure on the right, with his arms raised in protestation.
Although the town depicted in this scene does not exist in real life as it is shown, the anonymity of the figures and the generic feel of the Northern town allows the work to stand for everyone working and living in towns like this during the time. It is perhaps because of this familiarity that so many people are drawn to the works of Lowry.
