The present work is by far Lowry's most sought-after and valuable limited-edition print. The original painting that it was created after was last sold at auction with Christie’s in October 2022 for £7,846,500, eclipsing the previous auction record for a Lowry painting set in 2011, when The Football Match sold for over £5m. Painted in 1953, it is now on display in The Lowry Centre, Salford and has recently been valued at £6-10million.
Historian T.G. Rosenthal writes: “Going to the Match is an exceptional painting and its then record price reflects its quality not merely its appropriateness to the eventual buyer… [it is] a rare example of the piece d’occasion whose integrity and grandeur eclipses the occasion itself.”
The majority of Lowry’s oeuvre focused on the everyday comings and goings of the working class, which is perhaps what makes his football works that much more uplifting. A football fan himself, Lowry was a supporter of Manchester City and attended many home matches. Similar subject matter to the present work can also be seen in The Football Match and Coming from the Match, conveying the artist’s love of the sport. Many of these pictures have either direct or imaginary links with Burnden Park, Bolton, home of Bolton Wanderers football club, a ground only a few miles from Pendlebury and often visited by Lowry as a young man. However, as with so many of his Industrial Landscapes, his football pictures are usually a "composite" of the actual and the imaginary, incorporating a variety of elements from the stock mythos of Lowry's imagery. Factories, buildings, and streets, woven into a "vision". As Lowry once remarked: "If I had shown things as they are-it would not have looked like a vision. So, I had to make up symbols. With my figures also, of course."  The picture therefore is not a picture of a particular football match but a vision of all football matches.

About LS Lowry

LS Lowry

L.S. Lowry (1887-1976) was an iconic English artist best known for his distinctive portrayal of industrial landscapes and working-class life in northern England. Born in Lancashire, Lowry's work captures the stark reality of urban environments, often depicting factories, mills, and streets filled with his signature "matchstick men".

Despite the industrial subject matter, his paintings convey a sense of humanity and resilience, reflecting both the harshness and vibrancy of everyday life. With his unique style and eye for detail, Lowry became one of the most celebrated British artists of the 20th century, capturing the spirit of post-industrial Britain in a way that remains timeless.
