The present work depicts Crime Lake in Daisy Nook, a park in Greater Manchester. Despite the negative connotations, the lake’s name did not stem from it being a location of criminal activity and is instead thought to derive from the local word for meadow.
A photograph of Crime Lake evidences the accuracy of Lowry’s depiction, evidencing his interest in representing this location in particular, instead of creating an imaginary composite scene as in the case with so many of his industrial cityscapes. Lowry painted other works of Daisy Nook, such as Good Friday, Daisy Nook. As in the present work, Lowry depicts the figures in Good Friday enjoying a leisurely day off, suggesting that Lowry himself was fond of the area.
Lowry historians Judith Sandling and Mike Leber wrote of this work: “The lake is close to Daisy Nook and like it is popular with residents and visitors looking for recreation. Lowry, however, has used this pleasant spot as a backdrop for a more unpleasant scene suggested by the name of the lake. The focus of the painting is in the foreground where two men stand with their hands on the shoulders of a third man who they appear to be taking away. This scene is like the one that takes place in The Arrest. At first the eye is drawn to the numerous rowing boats on the lake; further examination reveals that many of the figures are involved in little dramas, for which the viewer must provide the details. Lowry was always interested in the unusual. The visual jokes he created, by associating the place names with events, show his sense of humour.”
Historian T.G. Rosenthal found the piece to be a joyful work, especially in contrast with Lowry’s more sparse lake scenes of the 1950s, remarking: “It is the complete antithesis of the rather cold, people-less mountain in that it is a densely populated local pleasure centre… more than 40 boats and countless people have taken to the water and there is a lively background of boatyards, shops and some houses. In the foreground there is a small selection of people who include a man being arrested by two plainclothes policemen as Lowry gives us a reference or even a justification for the paintings title… Crime Lake is an interesting combination of placid water and human bustle’.
