Paul Thierry’s artwork is unique in its combination of sleek and stylish subjects with a gritty urban backdrop. His large-scale works feature brightly colored images that juxtapose high-end brands or iconic characters with graffiti in a distinctive way. The technique and presentation of his work add to its intensity and effect.
Paul creates his work using the monotype technique, which involves producing only a single impression. Instead of painting onto paper or canvas, he uses a glass or acrylic plate as his surface. The motif is then printed onto canvas, creating a monotype that is easily identified as such.
He manipulates the image by moving the paint while it is still wet, and then adds further elements by hand painting to add nuance and expression. Paul then presents his work in a unique way by mounting the glass and canvas a few centimeters apart. This allows light and space to influence both the colors on the surface and the graphic structures, and the two surfaces when superimposed create a complex image. By staggering the versions of the image, Paul transforms a two-dimensional work of art into a three-dimensional one.
