Annie Rodrigue

French-Canadian artist Annie Rodrigue is, above all, an instinctive painter. Inspired by the beauty of nature and the landscape, she channels her emotions directly onto the canvas, creating vibrant abstract works that feel poetic, dynamic and spontaneous. Shape and colour intertwine with words, letters and fragments of language that sweep across the surface, creating an experience that is both visual and literary.

For Rodrigue, painting has always been a powerful form of communication – a way of expressing what cannot easily be said in words. Her carefully balanced compositions suggest the organic movement of petals in bloom, unfurling and dissolving across the canvas, yet remain deliberately open to interpretation. Each viewer discovers something different, though every work contains what the artist describes as a ‘volcano of emotions’.

Annie Rodrigue Biography

Abstracted florals alive with emotion.

Over many years she has developed a distinctive approach rooted in experimentation and layered processes. Wash drawings, printing with objects, scraping and dripping all contribute to the depth and texture of the surface, revealing glimpses of colour and gesture beneath. These techniques suggest something half-hidden or unresolved, creating a sense of mystery and movement within the composition. Dripping in particular plays a defining role, structuring the space of the painting and acting almost as a personal signature.

As Rodrigue explains: “Each and every work controls its own space and becomes its own world. The rhythmic nuances that catch the light contrast with the depth implied by the black areas and give the impression that a dialogue is taking place between the spectator and the painting”

Originally trained as an art teacher, Rodrigue now dedicates herself entirely to her painting practice. She holds a degree in visual arts and art history from Laval University in Quebec and has received both the Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Québec (CALQ) award and the Zénith Prize. Her work has been exhibited widely in galleries across the UK, the USA, Canada, France.
