Anna Gammans Biography

Light and colour in motion

Anna Gammans has gained international recognition for her emotionally charged oil paintings, which are defined by bold colour, expressive texture, and a palpable sense of movement. Her work captures the fleeting intensity of life’s most magical moments with a dynamic, instinctive energy.

She has exhibited and sold her paintings in over one hundred galleries worldwide and held more than thirty solo exhibitions. Her collaborations include projects with major institutions such as Sotheby’s, the Berkeley Group, and the University of York, each of which reflects her growing reputation as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary British painting.

Anna’s landscapes celebrate the beauty and transience of nature, illuminated by vivid sunsets and ‘exploding skies’ that release a spectrum of radiant colour. In her new abstract works, she explores the same emotional territory with a freer, more intuitive approach. Thick layers of impasto and vibrant tonal contrasts invite viewers to connect with their own powerful emotions , to embrace the exhilarating complexity of a beautifully chaotic existence.
Influenced by the Impressionists yet distinctly modern in vision, Anna reinterprets their sensibility through a contemporary lens. Working primarily in oils, she uses brushes, sponges, palette knives, and even her hands, allowing instinct to guide her as she becomes immersed in a world of her own making.

Alongside her studio practice, Anna holds a First-Class Master’s degree in Broadcast Journalism and has presented and produced programmes for the BBC, Sotheby’s, and Tate Modern. She also co-presents and produces The Good, The Bad and The Arty, a podcast dedicated to making the art world more open, engaging, and accessible to all.

“Whilst allowing my subconscious to guide the creative process, I evoke balance and harmony through colour, texture, and form. These more abstract elements often become subjects in their own right, leaving space for a viewer’s personal interpretation.”
