Patrick Rubinsteain conceives his ideas in a similar spirit to that of Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana, asserting that art should provoke a universal emotion. With this celebratory new collection, Rubinstein pays homage to some of the most iconic artworks of the 20th century, as well as the ‘Masters’ responsible for them. Taking such famous images as Magritte’s surreal man in a bowler hat to the vibrant colours and cut-outs of Matisse, these works offer a dazzling new perspective on some of the world’s best–loved artworks.
Patrick’s avant-garde technique, applying what he calls the double and triple principles, creates a kinetic effect, allowing visual variations depending on the viewing angle or when there is a change in the direction or intensity of the light source. The Double Principle depicts the fusion of two images designed to blend into one which is then applied on his chosen medium in a concertina configuration which allows the two original images to be seen from both sides. As the spectator moves around the artwork the interlacing of the two views from different angles show a constantly changing image. The Triple Principle depicts three images using a blade technique perpendicular to central image, again allowing the visual variations but maintaining defined sight of the central image throughout the viewing experience.

The ‘Exception’ series marks a turning point for Rubinstein as he explores monochrome colour palettes and precious materials, resulting in some distinctive new optical effects. Taking Robert Indiana’s seminal ‘Love’ sculpture as his starting point, he has created a series of monumental, luxurious works which both illuminate and reflect light as they take us on a mesmerising visual journey.
