Shakkei 借 (borrow) and 景 (scenery, view) takes its name from the ancient Chinese practice of incorporating background landscapes into the composition of a garden design, enhancing the overall aesthetic. This collection builds on the artist’s established technique of using the remembered to create paintings that evoke time, place, and emotion, inviting the viewer to begin their own journey of discovery as they lose their gaze in these complex and kaleidoscopic works.

‘SHAKKEI’ IS THE IDEA OF BORROWING SCENERY FROM LANDSCAPES TO ENHANCE THE BEAUTY THAT IS IN THE PRESENT MOMENT.

“I’m bringing those things that I remember back to the studio through colour, texture, through the compositional decisions that I’m making.
