We Must Be Careful
Size:44 x 44 in.
We Must Be Careful is a 39" x 39" mixed media work in which The Connor Brothers continue their exploration of truth, identity and constructed reality. The piece centres on a striking, fragmented portrait of a woman borrowed from the visual lexicon of mid-century pulp illustration. Her expression is both poised and watchful, as though caught between performance and authenticity. Across the upper section of the canvas, the bold text reads: We must be careful about what we pretend to be – a line that resonates like a warning, a confession, and a cultural critique all at once.
The artwork is built from layered, torn surfaces, revealing glimpses of colour, form, and hidden narrative beneath. Blocks of vivid turquoise, soft cream and dusky grey form a backdrop that feels simultaneously retro and contemporary, while the collage of aged book covers in the lower right corner hints at the fabricated histories and borrowed voices that define the duo’s style.
The Connor Brothers – the artistic partnership of Mike Snelle and James Golding – are known for their playful merging of fiction and reality. Their origin story began as a myth, a deliberate construction used to protect their anonymity and test the art world’s appetite for narrative over fact. Now working openly under their own names, they continue to question how identity is shaped, packaged and believed. In this piece, the message is clear: the masks we wear eventually become the selves we inhabit, and in an age of curated personas, we should choose them wisely.
