Stephen Goldstein

Born in Brooklyn, New York, and now based in Fairfield, Connecticut, mixed-media street artist Stephen Goldstein creates dynamic 3D works using reclaimed materials- most notably, vintage license plates. His artwork celebrates pop culture, feminism, and contemporary social issues, blending craftsmanship with cultural commentary.

Goldstein began his practice in New York City, where he started sourcing used license plates from across the U.S. via eBay to create intricate maps of the United States. His style has since evolved into expressive sculptures and portraits—his first subjects being his own two children. Today, his upcycled works incorporate not only license plates but also guitar picks, tin roofing, car parts, bottle caps, and beer cans, all animated by bold pops of color that bring each portrait to life.

Stephen Goldstein Biography

Goldstein’s creative process is both meticulous and intuitive. Each piece is built and deconstructed multiple times, with photographs documenting each stage so he can reconstruct the final composition precisely. He also conducts in-depth research on each subject and sources materials that carry personal or geographic significance. For instance, in his recent portrait of Taylor Swift, Goldstein included license plates from Pennsylvania (her birthplace), Tennessee (Nashville), and Missouri (a playful nod to Kansas City, home of Swift’s fiancé).

Deeply rooted in his local community, Goldstein says, “I enjoy being around local, creative people.” His neighbors and friends often contribute used license plates for his projects, and in return, he has donated several pieces to local charities and community organizations throughout Fairfield County.
