Reflections X
Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011)
Reflections X from Reflections, 1995
Lithograph printed in colours on Lana White wove paper
Signed, dated numbered from the edition of 30 in pencil
Printed and published by Tyler Graphics, New York, with their blindstamp
Size: 19 x 16 in. (48.4 x 40.9 cm)
The present work is the tenth of twelve lithographs belonging to Frankenthaler’s Reflections series, created between August 1993 and March 1995. The Reflections series demonstrates the artist’s mature approach to abstraction and her sustained fascination with the expressive possibilities of colour. In these works, she layered translucent washes and fluid gestures to evoke shifting moods and fleeting impressions rather than literal imagery. The works often suggest landscapes, water, or atmospheric phenomena without fully depicting them, inviting viewers to engage emotionally and imaginatively with the surface. Through subtle tonal variations and delicate movement, Reflections exemplifies Frankenthaler’s enduring commitment to abstraction as a means of conveying sensation, memory, and perception.
The Reflections series was printed and published by the renowned Tyler Graphics studio in New York under the direction of master printer Kenneth E. Tyler (b. 1931). Tyler is a highly influential American printer who transformed the field of contemporary printmaking in the second half of the twentieth century. Tyler has worked closely with many of the era’s leading artists, most notably working with David Hockney since the mid 1960s. The collaboration between Frankenthaler and Tyler began in 1977 was especially significant because it allowed Frankenthaler to translate the fluidity and luminosity of her paintings into print form while continuing to experiment with texture, layering, and colour. Working together at Tyler Graphics, Frankenthaler explored complex printmaking techniques that captured the atmospheric qualities characteristic of her soak-stain paintings. Tyler’s technical expertise and willingness to push conventional boundaries enabled her to create richly nuanced prints that maintained the spontaneity and delicacy of her painted work. Their partnership produced some of the most innovative prints of Frankenthaler’s career, demonstrating how collaborative printmaking could become an extension of an artist’s broader visual language rather than merely a reproduction process.
