Brian Keith Stephens

Brian Keith Stephens

Brian Keith Stephens has always been intrigued by the ways in which animals are used as a means of storytelling throughout literature and art. Their qualities and characteristics often provide a natural metaphor for human emotion and behaviour, in a way that feels both familiar and intriguing. His paintings develop through a process of building and reworking the surface to create a sense of depth that feels both visual and tactile. A quiet sensitivity remains throughout, giving the work a calm, painterly presence. The history of the surface stays visible, revealing both the timing and direction of his creative journey.

Since 1996 his art has been featured in over 100 exhibitions, and he has worked with galleries in the USA, New York City, Boston, San Francisco, and in Italy, France, Poland and Denmark. In 2004, he received a MFA in Painting from the City College of New York. “The instant when colours laid next to each other start to shine and shimmer, change from one hue to another and reveal the intention, this is when I see the possibility of meaning.”

Brian Keith Stephens Biography

Brian Keith Stephens has always been intrigued by the ways in which animals are used as a means of storytelling throughout literature and art. Their qualities and characteristics often provide a natural metaphor for human emotion and behavior, in a way that feels both familiar and intriguing.

Drawing on a long tradition in which animals carry meaning across cultures and time, his work continues this visual language through a contemporary lens. References to folk art, storytelling, and symbolic imagery appear throughout, where animals function as both image and idea. Through repetition, pattern, and subtle shifts in form, familiar figures are reworked and reimagined, allowing them to hold multiple associations at once while remaining open to interpretation.

His paintings develop through a process of building and reworking the surface, where layers are added and reduced. Pattern and embedded forms move through the image, creating a sense of depth that feels both visual and tactile. A quiet sensitivity remains throughout, giving the work a calm, painterly presence. The history of the surface stays visible, revealing both the timing and direction of his creative journey.
